May 17, 2010  -  The Birth

On May 16th, Izjah began panting and acting ready to go into labor. It went on all thru the night into the next day until finally at 11:15 a.m. the first baby was born. But the second baby got stuck, I couldn’t get it out, and the sac broke.

After having gone thru what I did with my other girl’s delivery I wasn’t about to take any chances. We rushed off to the vet and I was certain the baby stuck in the canal was dead. We arrived and the vet immediately got to work to get the baby “unstuck”. She was successful and when it came out she announced it was alive. I WAS SO HAPPY AND REALLY JUST COULDN’T BELIEVE IT! The 3rd baby was born dead and it was obvious that baby had died before Izjah had gone into labor or at the time that she had. The last 6 pups were taken c-section. We decided to go with a Hollywood theme for names so all the pups have a famous actor or actress’ last name for their names, except “Domino”, who has double spots on his head, which immediately made me think of a domino and the name just stuck.

So far momma and babies are all doing well!

It is amazing how fast these little sweeties have grown! They’ve plumped up so, that sometimes I have to double take and make sure I’m really looking at the right puppy. I have finally been able to distinguish the pups by their markings, although I have to admit, sometimes I still need to flip a pup two over to be sure LOL! Today the pups got their first nail trim—it’s amazing how fast those little claws grow too! Izjah is being a good mommy to all her pups and is very patient with me taking them out to hold & cuddle, take pictures, wash up—if necessary, clip nails, etc. Trust is a very important factor in my relationship with my dogs, without it I would have very nervous mothers on my hands. The pups are becoming stronger and more and more self capable everyday. Meaning they are able to crawl their way around their little area quite well. One time, one of the pups was on the backside of momma. This little pup army wiggled his way up and over momma’s head, between momma’s legs, and wriggled right up to a nipple! It was cute and incredible to watch.

It is so fun to wake up in the morning and see little tiny eyes peeking back at me! Not all the pups have completely finished opening their eyes, but mostly. By tomorrow they will all be caught up and blinking at their bright new world! The pups are all doing wonderful—healthy and strong, each and every one of them. I took photos to highlight their markings and their sweet little faces. As you can see there isn’t a bad pick in the bunch! They are all beautifully marked, with gorgeous heads and faces. Each one has their own little tells that make them simply irresistible. We have begun handling the pups more and more, taking them from their pen and holding, massaging and cuddling them for a full half hour every day. This gets them used to us, our smells, being moved about, and being handled and touched all over. We rub their little paws to help them feel at ease having their paws touched when they are older for grooming and nail clipping (it doesn’t always work, sometimes the paws are just a “No touchy!” thing for Cavaliers. But it helps them with trust in any case. We also lay them on their backs and ease them into relaxation by doing a full back massage as they lay in our palms belly up. This helps in developing a calm, relaxed mind, and also builds trust. The older the pups get the more personal our relationship becomes with them. It’s a precious time, getting all these sweet little fur bundles ready for their new homes. So many stages to reach and accomplish. Then before we know it, you are here at our door to pick them up! An exciting emotional time for all. I hope you are all looking forward to the Puppy Picnic, only a few weeks away! Until then, we’ll be working hard to get them ready!

June 7, 2010  -  Three Weeks

The pups are starting to walk on all fours, wobbling all around, cute as can be. Their faces have really filled out, and their eyes give them added expression to their sweet little fuzzy faces. Each pup loves cuddle time and some have even started to be playful, tugging at our fingers. Soon they’ll be getting all over the place, playing and romping with each other. Some have found their growl and that is just about the cutest thing ever to my human ears! This weekend the pups will have their first taste of puppy mush (that’s always a terrific and fun mess!). These pups are so beautiful, it’s going to be tough to decide who to keep!

June 14, 2010  -  Four Weeks

The pups are beginning to romp and play with each other. There are starting to develop their own personalities.  The big even this week was “Milk Time”! Goats milk in a bowl that will help them transition to puppy mush and then to dog food and then mommas can finally fully wean the pups. They all have their teeth so that’s something the mommies will not be able to take much longer LOL—Ouch! Like all new things some of the pups were nervous and scared of this new idea. So I would gently help them get a taste of the sweet milk and as soon as they licked their furry little lips, most of the pups went back for more—YUMMIE. By the 4th time all the pups were able to drink up so now there is most times, not a drop left, much to the dismay of the moms since that was their treat—the leftovers! Everyone is doing wonderfully, moms and pups alike! It’s been an adventurous week.
