May 12,
2010—The Birth This was both a happy and sad event for our family. On May 11th, Fibi
went into premature labor. It was too early for the puppies and she lost 3
that first night. She held onto the last 3 and they all had heartbeats,
though one was slightly slow. The heartbeats stayed strong and at 5:02 a.m.
on May 12th, I awoke to the sound of a baby puppy crying! I was so
thrilled-they were going to make it! The puppy was strong from the beginning.
Having one more day in the womb made a big difference that was noticeable
from the 3 that hadn’t made it. Little differences like getting the last of
her fur and her genitalia was complete. (With the other 3 it was really hard
to see the genitalia, I could barely make it out. And they didn’t have fur on
their faces or down the last half of their legs). After the pup was settled
on a nipple I listened for the other two heartbeats, which were good and
strong. But alas, the next pup, born and hour later, was born dead. The last
pup also had a strong heartbeat. I was sure she’d survive, but Fibi did not
push her out in time after her placenta broke away in order to be born. One
minute her heartbeat was there, the next it was gone. I searched all over
Fibi’s belly for a 1/2 hour but to no avail and finally was certain the baby
had died inside her. It was the last pup, and after two days of no sleep and
clinging to desperate hopes against the odds, I just broke down. I mourned
the loss of 3 ruby baby girls, and 2 black & tan baby boys. But I had one
survivor! And for that I am grateful. She is doing great. She fought and beat
the odds. She could potentially still fail, but I have no reason to think
that will happen. I am vigilant at Fibi’s side constantly attending to her
and the baby making sure she is warm and getting plenty of nursing in-And she
is a great nurser! We named this puppy Amazia, because she fought the odds and won, and
doesn’t that Amaze ya? |

2010—One Week I can hardly believe already a week has passed! Amazia is living up to
her name and doing “Amazingly”! She is a fat little thing now. And so cute I
can barely stand to put her down when I’m done holding her. Milestones for
this week are: Completely nurses and finds the nipple all by herself. Got her
nails trimmed for the first time. And got a new littermate! Yes, that’s
right… My other girl, Izjah had her puppies—8 of them. That’s a lot of taxing
work on a momma and Amazia has a lot to benefit by having littermates. It
forces her to realize she has to “fight” for things not just lay on her back
and be waited on. A singleton pup doesn’t have to compete with anyone, so you
have to work very closely with them so they will develop mentally and
physically. But being able to put a couple of Izjah’s pups with her, equals
the playing field for all, mommas and pups. Fibi took to the new pup, a boy
named “Cage” immediately. She allowed him to nurse and she licked him all
over, welcoming him in. I’m very proud of Fibi being such a good mother. Amazia has white toes on all four paws and white down the front of her
chest. She is absolutely gorgeous! |

May 26,
2010—Two Weeks Little Amazia is turning into a real beauty. She has a rich dark coat,
and tiny touches of white on her paws that make it look like she dipped them
in white paint. Her chest has a flash of white, too. She can lift her head up
and push upward on her front paws, and now that she has 2 brothers and a
sister to contend with she is much more active, which is just as she should
be. Because she was born early she still has not opened her eyes, but in
about four more days I predict she will begin seeing her world in a new
light—literally! Around the same time her ears will open as well. This
development will bring about even more curiosity about her surroundings and
pretty soon, before we know it we’ll be chasing after her! It is so fun to witness these babies grow and become more and more
“real”. Right now they can fit right into my palm. But not for long… So I
have to enjoy it while I can, because the next phase is coming, and it’s just
as fun! |

2010—Three Weeks Amazia has a new name! Her name will be Ellie. So cute! She has really
grown! She has started walking on all fours but she is still wobbley. It’s so
darn cute to watch her move about, clambering over her “littermates”, her
mom, trying to get around. Her face is so full and beautiful now, with her
gorgeous big eyes staring at me, I swear my heart melts a million times a
day. Soon she will be able to romp and play, and then the real fun begins! |

2010—Four Weeks I dare you to look at those pictures and not say “Awwww”! Is Ellie
adorable or what? Look at that face, those eyes, just ready to love you up!
What a sweet heart she is, and getting so big now. Big milestones this week
are: Moved down to main living room into big pen with everyone all together,
both momma’s mothering the pups together, how sweet! The puppies really tried
to take it all in, it was very fun to see them explore and try to clamber all
around. The other big thing was their first taste of “puppy milk” (which is
goats milk) to get them ready to eat solids. Eating out of a dish is an
important thing to learn. I just set the pups into position so they can smell
the milk, and if they need help I dip their face just ever so slightly, just
enough to get milk on their mouth. Once they get a taste of that, Mmmm
–mmm-Yummie! They search for more and sometimes they get lucky and find it
all on their own. What a treat! Although sometimes new things are scary to
puppies, even yummy puppy milk, so it’s just the beginning of getting used to
eating all on their own, and they are still timid and shy, but they also are
brave enough to keep trying. Such good little sweet little puppies! The pups spend the daytime in the big pen, but then it’s back up in the
bedroom at night for snuggle mommy time and slurrpy nipple time-LOL. But in a
week’s time, the living room will become home base for everyone day &
night. Well, it’s been a big week, another week of firsts! |

June 14,
2010 -
Five Weeks (2 days early) Because I am off to Arizona this week I wanted to make sure you got your
Update! My family will be taking good care of your pup while I’m away to pick
up my oldest daughter who is finished with her college internship and visit
with my mom & step dad. I’m looking very forward to the sun! But enough
about me! Ellie is quite the little rascal. Very playful. Though she is not very
brave… she is still nervous about “Milk Time”, but getting better. She is
quite the cuddler, so I just nuzzle her in my neck all the time! Only two
more weeks and the pups will be able to go outside-Yippie! If it ever stops
raining that is - HA! The pups and moms are all doing great! I sure will miss them while I’m
away. |

June 23,
2010 - Six Weeks Today all the pups got their first real bath! I filled the big laundry
tub with just about an inch of sudsy water, then set Ellie in and lathered
her up. Then it was over to the bathroom sink where I rinsed her all off and
“wrung” her out. (Your puppy fits into the bathroom sink—LOL—not for long!)
After, she just looked so cute all wrapped up in her towel I had to make that
this week’s photo. I dried her off with a towel and “spritzed” her. Mmmm, she
smelled so nice! Of course that won’t last and she’ll need another one soon!
She layed out on the deck with all her “littermates” to dry off. (Yes, going
out on the deck to be outside is new too!) She then played around (after
getting over the shock of getting all cleaned up—LOL) The pups all just kind
of sit still, stunned a little over getting bathed. As I’ve said, all things
new are always a “situation” to a puppy! The pups were also introduced to mush today, which is ground bits of
puppy food in their milk. I also have two bowls of their food dry sitting out
for them to taste and try. The pups all seem to say, “What? Texture? Oh-oh,
we have ourselves a situation!” Oh they’re all so cute and brave, aren’t
they?? I also doubled the size of their pen and gave them a crate (with no door)
with a towel inside to snuggle all together in to help them get used to a
crate, placed puppy pads inside to help them get used to pottying in a
specific spot to keep their pen clean. And moms only visit morning and
evenings with the pups now. It’s already time to start weaning, I can hardly
believe it! And it’s been a week full of first’s and successes for your
little Ellie. |
